news.cnet.com — Apple's iPhone 3G hits store shelves on Friday, but if you haven't been struck with iPhone fever, don't fret. There are plenty of alternatives that offer similar style and features. And they may even be easier on your wallet in the long run. To some Apple fans, these phones are simply iPhone wannabes. But others see them as smart alternatives.

People call these phones iPhone wannabees as if to insult them when they were most likely designed just for that purpose. To dilute the market. Without violating copyrights they are making it increasingly harder for Apple to stand out.Though I find it hard to believe full qwerty phones like the Xperia and Bold are iphone wannabees. Except to the most devout Apple follower.

I completely agree. The Bold isn't an iPhone wannabe, it's just a new blackberry. People now think that every phone with a touch screen is an "iPhone wannabe." If the iPhone was made by any company besides Apple, I think that there wouldn't even be the term "iPhone wannabe." People just have the impression that the iPhone is the best in the market, and everything else is just trying to keep up with it.

Yeah there is generally a lot of hype out there and people are getting really caught up in it. Another favorite of mine is when people call new blackberry phones "iphone killers" as if RIM didn't already have the majority of the smartphone market.
