The concept makes sense.. I'm thinking of the Vita Chambers in Bioshock - dying without really dying.Nothing like gibbing all over the bottom of that elevator shaft in HalfLife though.
The most recent memorable game over screen I can recall is from the PSP remake of Castlevania Rondo of Blood. The game is NOT easy, and the game over screen they show you just screams, 'Well you f**ked up, I guess Dracula wins after all, some hero you are.'
