zalea.org — French archaeologists have taken pottery from ancient Pompeii and played the grooves back like a record to get the sounds of the pottery workshop, including laughter. Click "Lire la vid?o" to play the short video which contains a sample of the audio.

digg+ just to see how many more people will post about what an amazing story this is. seriously, people...at the VERY least, wouldn't this have been on Fox News already? Of course, it is Saturday of a 3-day weekend in the US...everyone must've checked their brains for the weekend.

Seems completely possible. But it makes me curious as to the tools they used to shape the vases. It would have to be something sharp, which does seem weird.

Hey, c'mon, it was a prank, and it fooled me too. I was unable to confirm/deny it, so I posted it as-is. I marked it "inaccurate" as soon as the prank was revealed.Pranks serve a useful function in society. They're like elaborate jokes, that lead you down some primrose path, and then later the carpet gets yanked out from under you, and you learn something about the assumptions you were making about reality. So I say let the prank stand. It was a very good one that fooled a lot of people, and also stimulated a lot of interesting discussion and speculation. Perhaps that was the prankster's intent?

Wasn't the pipe-waving archaelogist obviously acted by Captain Haddock?

i always thought that they probaly did it with lasers like a pickup needle on a record should detect any kind of variation on any surface without damage to the pottery. put spun at the same speed as the pottery maker. i took some pottery classes in college and i wonder if it could be duplicated today?

What is Pompeii? Where it is? Never heard about Pompeii. This word remind me of my friend whose name is " Pompi". Is it something related to this?
