appleinsider.com — A tiny sub-notebook on its way from Apple Inc. is expected to re-establish the Mac maker as a leader in the field of compact computing while drawing parallels to the legendary PowerBook 2400 along the way. It's been nearly ten years since the Cupertino-based company dabbled in the realm of sub-notebooks, but for a stint of several years in the...

"The iPhone will be 3G in Japan just as it will be in the States, this can be achived through a software update, and I think the only reason it's not 3G out of the gate in the States in the simple fact that America doesn't have the 3G towers, less than 10% of the country is covered so it seems like your not ready for it yet."I assure you, this cannot be "achived" through a simple software update. The iPhone will be quad band, i.e. 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz, and 3G uses higher frequencies (1950 MHz and above). This is very much a hardware issue, and if Apple could simply enable it without having to install more expensive components, they would. It's not 3G out of the gate anywhere, because it lacks the physical capacity.

c**k. I need some sleep. What I meant to say was that 3G phones have higher bandwidth radios than their GSM counterparts (5Mhz vs. 200Khz). The frequencies the bands are at are relatively irrelevant, bandwidth is what matters.

I don't see why people are so hung up on optical drives. Rip your DVDs and CDs ahead of time, and install your software at home.

Not to mention that Macs actually have decent resale value. Just go on ebay and look up prices for the Mac Pro. Even for the used ones, they still fetch a good portion of their initial value. I still see 5 year old TiBooks regularly going for around $500. Can any used, 5 year old laptop from Gateway, Dell, or HP fetch that much?

Dude, how does your comment make any sense?

"Surely Japan isn't a big enough market to make a whole new computer for?"Apparently companies like Sony, Toshiba, NEC & Fujitsu do, but they're just niche market players...

Those do seem pretty cool. I was also lookin at the Samsung Q1 but thinking about loading Ubuntu on it. No way do I want Vista on any system I own. But I'll definitely wait to see what happens with this before making any decisions.

Apple's performance in the Japanese sector, despite being on par with industry-wide trends, has been an undeniable sore spot as of late ... more about this here: http://www.niftynotebooks.com/apple
