I use Perian:<a class="user" href="http://www.perian.org/">http://www.perian.org/</a>It basically patches Quicktime to play .avi, .xvid, .etc. What's neat is that allows FrontRow to play these files if they're in your ~/Movies directory. iTunes is still at a loss though.

iTunes is bloated and not in the sense that it has too many features but I get the feeling that it is built from an old and inefficient codebase. They need to do what they did to iCal for Leopard. It used to be dog slow to open and now it is instantaneous.
