pbs.org— Apple plans on adding hardware video encoding/decoding to all Macs. It will make even the lowliest Mac be able to play and encode video on the fly.

Hi, I'm a MacHi, I'm a PCI exist solely so that cultist humans can worship me because I look and feel like a Fisher Price toy, and my creators charge these human beings 50% more for hardware, because we like to do that.Well then, that settles it, you are officially the gayest thing ever known to man, and your very existence will cause the demise of mankind.
@actorboy:I don't know if you think you're saving me trouble, buddy, but it takes just as many clicks to read the original article as it does for me to digg you down....Even fewer clicks are necessary for me to block your bitchy pedantic ass. Buh-bye.
now that you mention iPhone, this could make sense. Apple put a lot of development into actual chips for iPhone... more so than most PC companies. Remember those 200 patents. Perhaps they designed something to capture video from iPhone's 2MP camera and transmit that online. It would be pretty easy to drop into a PC form factor as well and cheap if they are buying volume and footing dev costs.
@ chewie, no it doesn't. Theres a cap on some people's spending. The general consumer is not going to get a graphics card upgrade. For the core components, it's a neccisary cost (see integrated graphics too), an H.264 chip and it's $50 is not worth the added cost for CONSUMER Avg. joe, and he's gonna turn away at the higher priced. Wake the f**k up and pull your head out of the Apple.
@ LocalHI think your maths don't tell it all. I am a professional video producer and HD video is NOT 32bits. Most professional camcorders capture at 8 and 10 bits (DvcPRo HD, DigiBeta, HDCam). And it is estimated that uncompressed HD goes more around 220MBps which is quite massive in itself. You need some pretty fast RAID there to cope with so much data. But it is feasible. Additionally, all the cameras use compression before saving data to tape/HDD/solid state memory... so most of the people, but the really really picky ones, work in the native codec/compression scheme of the camera. 1080i in Panasonic's DVCProHD takes only 14MBps which is totally accesible for the most humble SATA HDD.
Dunno. Ever since Cringely predicted that Cisco would kick Apple's ass, and lose the iPhone trademark, everything he's writing sounds even more tinged with "look what I've pulled out of my ass this time". I remember looking into H.264 chips when the iRecord hardware started being promoted. It makes mucho sense, but at the same time, I don't like expecting anything that is somewhat less than granted, and that have a more than fair likelihood of never happening. So, sorry, Cringely. No pumped-up pulpit palpatations for this practical parishner.
It's NOT NEWS it is A RUMOR. It's terrible to see the almighty game of "telephone" being played out over and over again, with few people quite catching on that A is A. Rumors are NOT news, they're RUMOR.Cringely: "Now comes the rumor I have heard, that I believe to be a fact, that has simply yet to be confirmed."Even if you nod, and think the rumor is only a matter of time, before being verified... keep noting that it is STILL a rumor, until it is not, or we'll all be as confused as hell.
@balanced:"Cringely is also likely pulling the numbers, at least to an extent, from his ass."This, my friend, is a paraphrasing of what I was going to say. Great post.

Clearly you don't realize that a dedicated graphics card is a waste of money on lower-end computers.
