appleinsider.com — Apple said Monday that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed.

UNFORTUNATELY.... I love apple, but they have ALWAYS been this way. Sorry for the caps, but they've never been different. Switching to open source for OSX's base was purely out of need. Iphone, ipod etc, good products but all very locked for apple to control. Is steve jobs a control freak? Maybe...... but anyway, hopefully some other companies step up and deliver a product thats able to compete. And if they do, you Apple detractors put your money where your mouth is and buy the other product. Me, I love Apple products and I will continue to buy them, but only because I have hacked every piece of Apple hardware I've ever owned. Ipod, powerbook 12", even my old mac classic. Be it hardware or software. Just buy the product, then promptly ignore them. Take this announcement, couple it with the relocker story and you've got what you need to do. Stay one step ahead of big brother!!! :D ..... If you get something good out of continued Apple support (software updates, etc) then you have to play THEIR game.... they warned you, you fix whatever you need, then resume hacking later. :/ ..... Best solution would be to learn some electronics and build your own dream machine ;) .... but thats hard and why companies with lots of employees with strict schedules will probably always reign supreme. Mass production ftw. commence digg down

i just took mine in last friday and i tried to make it seem as though my iphone was normal, but the genius just happen to move my springboard loaded with summerboard. i panicked for a sec, and said i wasnt really sure if he'd be cool with that so i didnt mention it. he said that apple didnt really care, and he actually asked if i'd done it with ifuntastic. all in all he did a warranty exchange for me (my volume was like super low, and I had two white dots constantly on my screen).

When you say ringtones nonsense, what do you mean? As far as I have gathered, Apple's official ringtones are much better than any other mobile carrier – e.g. they are cheaper, they don't expire after three months, etc. Also, I don't think you can call this Apple threatening to maliciously brick iPhones – or do you expect their update process to fully support all the weird and wonderful unofficial hacks people might have done?

See I think it's just the wording that has people pissed off, I don't think people mind so much if apple just leaves them alone and things just end up breaking naturally via updates, because that's a risk you take. What people are pissed of and scared about is Apple releasing updates with no purpose but to screw up unlocked phones, which of course they haven't outright said they are gonna do.Apple doesn't have to waste a second with concerns over modders stability , but they also shouldn't waste a second trying to close doors that modders are using or disable the features they have added. there is no harm in 3rd party apps and the DMCA clearly states that unlocking your phone is ok so lets all just live and let live.

The problem with Apples policy on ringtones is that you cant use songs you already own. While the phone is fully capable of using any mp3 as a ringt tone (as most, if not all smart phones do) Apple won't allow it. Instead you have to pay .99 for it. So even though you just bought your spanking new mp3 off of the itunes store, if you want play it as a ring tone, you have to buy again. As for bricking the phones, if you modded your phone, you should have expected this as a possible outcome. Frankly, even though it is a completely s**tty move on their part, I am sure that it is part of the contract with ATT.If Apple wanted to not be dicks about it though, they would show a way to flash the firmware to the unmodded version so it just didn't f**k up everyones phone.Hopefully this sparks enough issue that it is taken to court. Its bulls**t that you aren't sold an unlocked phone for any carrier in the first place. Not just the iphone either, but any phone.

I believe they are bluffing and trying to frighten us from unlocking our phones. If they made us spend 600 on an unsubstitides phone, then dropped the price, then killed the phone because I didn't go with the carrier apple wanted me to, I would never buy another at&t or apple product again.
