money.cnn.com— Apple's ulterior motive for unlocking music? Steve Jobs is calling on the recording industry to unlock music and set consumers free. Why now? Could it have something to do with the iPhone?

""Steve Jobs is calling on the recording industry to unlock music and set consumers free. Why now?"It might have something to do with the lawsuits in Europe (that he references in his letter)... Just a guess..."I don't think jobs really cares at this point, yes maybe there was some fleeting moment in the back of his head where he though he should speak out in behalf of iTunes but why would he really care at this point? I think the motive is elsewhere whether it be about shifting gears to ready for the iPhone like the story suggested or if his motivations were wholeheartedly begnign at bringing the consumer a better exeprience or if he just wanted to garner some more karma points for his company and future poetential market shares. Personally I like to think it was all of that mixed in together but what I don't think it is at all is the pressure alone in Europe. Think about it. Jobs could care less, just as long as Norway and the rest of the European countries filing lawsuits against Apple continue to sell iPods, the Real money maker for the company. I think in Jobs multi-layered manifesto he points this out and waves a multi-colored banner with truth scribbled across it stating that "Hey, you guys are pestering the wrong people, we make a fraction of a cent selling a DRMed iTunes Song"
CNN missed the story. If they knew the difference between WIFI and EDGE they might have had a story. The reason Steve wrote the letter is because he has nothing to fear from the labels any more. He's daring them to pull DRM now because it doesn't matter and he never wanted it to begin with. He' s also pointing out that European governments may be unwilling puppets to the European labels and none of it matters any more. Because of the Beatles deal Apple is now on an equal footing with the labels. Steve is in competition with them for listeners and now Bands. He can say whatever he wants. Before, the only deal he could cut with a band was to have them sign the back of an iPod: that was U2. Now they can do any kind of promotional deals they want with any band any time. That is HUGE.If the iPhone download issue is actually real (CNN doesn't make this clear) then it's about the cell carriers or the labels (CNN doesn't make this clear either) restricting downloads of songs via WIFI just because the iPhone happens to support EDGE too. I can download songs wirelessly to my laptop right now via iTunes. If I can't do the same with my iPhone because of weird licensing restrictions, it's a story albeit a MUCH smaller one than the fact that Apple is now in the music business.
