I've been carrying an airline adapter with my (various) laptops for 7 freaking years. In all that time (average of 2 cross-country flights/year) i've had *one* airplane that had the appropriate power plug. It was a 45 minute connecting flight (Airbus A320 FWIW), so it was pretty useless.BTW, the airline "adapter" is a $2 pigtail that attaches to the cigarette lighter plug on my car adapter.
I started using the iGo adapter several years ago, the "tip" system is pretty impressive. The one travel charging bag I now carry is a little hefty, but it can charge everything I carry: laptop, phone, blackberry, PSP, iPod, camera, and anything else I want to support with another small tip. While plugged into the 12-volt adapter, you can charge your laptop, and also charge another smaller device as well. Also, if you want to use your 12-volt adapter, try to book your seat in the first 10-12 rows of coach class - beyond that, there typically aren't any plugs.
I bought a power inverter at radio shack that has an airline tip and cig lighter tip. It has a standard 110 outlet and a usb outlet that can charge an ipod.. works great. I'll just use my standard power adapter with my MBP.
They really need to either make an automobile adapter or allow others too because I am sick of having to use a power inverter. $60 is way too much for a power adapter that only works on planes and doesn't charge the battery.
