"Nearly every Mac owner I know now runs WINDOWS on their Intel Macs"so why'd they buy it?

Well I doubt that it's as high as 53%, but it's likely a larger number than 5.39%, maybe 10% but I have no hard numbers to go by.

@h2d2A) He claims nowhere near that.B) What, specifically, is your problem with the point he made? You can certainly argue with other points in his "marketshare myth" article, but I believe the only one you are highlighting here is the way the marketshare ratios--they way they're stated--understate just what is "Apple" in each of Apple's sales. Dells sell computers that are one part Dell, one part Microsoft; Apple sells computers that are two parts Apple. (All of Dell's sales volume nets them 0% marketshare of the OS market, and all of Microsoft's dominance gets them 0% of the computer sales marketshare. Each of Apple's sales does both.)It's just a mitigating factor in the way one should think about the computer market overall.

This 5.39% must be United States market share.Because Apple's share of the worldwide market was at 2.0 percent In the first quarter of 2006.http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1781According to research firm Gartner, worldwide PC shipments totaled 57 million units in the first quarter of 2006, representing a 13.1 percent increase over the same period last year. But in that time, Apple's share of the worldwide market slipped from 2.2 percent to a mere 2.0 percent, the firm's data shows.Similarly, Apple's share of the personal computer market in the United States also remains relatively flat at 3.6 percent. Although this figure is down from 3.8 percent in the first quarter of 2005, Gartner's data indicates that Apple gained one tenth of a percent in share over the fourth quarter of 2005.
