appleinsider.com — In an apparent bid to rapidly gain share of the online browser market dominated by rival Microsoft, Apple is leveraging its vast iTunes install base to recommend that Windows users also download and install the latest version of its Safari web browser.

Apple: you should be sewed for this.

There's nothing Safari can do to crash your OS. The only software that can crash a modern operating system would be drivers. If you find non-driver software crashing your OS then your OS has some fundamental design problem.

All of the days where OSX was the only thing of theirs worth using.

Microsoft stopped defending themselves from their practices years ago. Apple constantly market themselves as the 'good guys', then go and play the pot calling the kettle black.

Its not about being afraid of competition. Its about them trying to trick people to gain market share. Software updates are often very confusing for non-computer literate people. I don't know how many times I've heard from an older relative "It popped up and asked me if I wanted to install something and I didn't know what to do". To call it a software update is being deliberately misleading. Apple is now contributing to the garbage that they spend so much money ridiculing in their ads.

I will agree on this one. I went in blind, thinking the "update" was for the iphone browser. If available at the time, I would have kicked Apple square in the nuts on this one.

I didn't want IE to begin with... Microsoft just went ahead and installed it without even asking.

What exactly does it mean to be a good guy? I don't particularly care to defend Apple (more of a linux person), but this whole thread is laughable. people are upset that apple are suggesting to users to install a browser for more secure browsing (which would definitely be the case compared to IE).

because "bother" doesn't = install. It's your choice... little snitch? A message via soft. install is simply that... not an install.
