tgdaily.com — Apple has been quite clear about the multi-touch in desktop and notebook computers ? this feature will not be available in the near term. However, contrary to the public statement, we received word that Apple may be working on a multi-touch project due for a Macworld introduction in January 2009.

I've always found the anti-touchscreen discussions to be odd. Some people are very passionate about how much it will suck, but they are completely missing the idea that touchscreen will be used IN ADDITION to whatever other input methods you prefer. If you prefer keyboards or mice or wacom tablets or whatever then what is the big deal about adding a new OPTIONAL way to do it?

Doesn't anyone just use a mouse and keyboard anymore?

If all you want to do is poke around the net, why are you spending $1200 on a computer? You could get a high quality gaming machine for that price if you don't go Apple. And if all you want is an internet computer, you could go as low as $500 and still get a pretty nice computer.

Integrating touch into the monitor itself would be fun, like that HP touchscreen PC out on the market right now, but I don't think that's really Apple's style. If they did anything with touch for desktops, I think it will be more likely to see the new MacBook track pad in a standalone desktop form factor. It would make for an awfully nice mouse replacement for most situations (doesn't suit your needs? use a normal mouse or even better have both), and have all of the multitouch capabilities in something that's comfortable to use. It could be the same size or maybe slightly larger than the existing track pad, perhaps integrate an LCD screen for contextual buttons (why not, other than cost?), keep the physical downward click, and it would still be thinner than the iPod Touch because it would essentially be a dumb device without need for a processor, storage, audio interfaces, etc.I'm just dreaming, but I think that makes a ton of sense and would be a joy to use. That three finger app switching motion by itself would be cool to have on the desktop. Oh, and they definitely will need to bring out PC drivers for that s**t, for sure.
