networkworld.com— Apple may soon take Woolworths to court over its use of a logo which it claims looks too similar to its own.

Well, I can understand the Victoria School of Business case... Apple has the right to protect their trademark, and it totally makes sense to go after any possible trademark infringement for future legal disputes. But the Woolworth's logo is quite a bit different... Maybe they look similar in smaller sizes? Seems like a bit of a stretch to me...
Describing Woolworths as philanthropic toward farmers is quite misleading. Most farmers I know that deal(or have dealt) with Woolworths hate them because they use their huge market share to squeeze suppliers very hard on price. If you did a little research about why Woolworths are Australia's largest pub owners you'd also find that it was all about market share. They bought the pubs because it gave them bottleshop licenses in the areas they wanted them. They've since been caught numerous times illegally opposing other bottleshop licences(by funding fake community groups to oppose applications) & illegally pressuring competing small bottle shops in all sorts of ways.
I'm surprised no one sees the reason here. The store name starts with a W. So they make a W logo, but then add a stray mark centered, angled right and since it's not related to the W, why is it there at all? I totally see what Apple is upset about. Take away that top stray mark that doesn't belong to anything, and this is a non-issue. Apple has to think down the line, a small white version of this on the back on an mp3 player could indeed look too similar to the Apple logo.
