^ Actually, the iMac uses all desktop parts... desktop HD, desktop optical... and before it switched to Intel, it had a G5, which was of course a desktop-only chip.If the iMac gets Merom, then it's not because they COULDN'T include Conroe.

This is just a re-reporting of an appleinsider story posted on Thursday, with no new information. No digg.

I can see the MPBs moving to Merom ASAP, Apple needs to keep them on the cutting edge to sustain competitiveness and maintain the higher cost. But I think the Macbook will stay on Yonah for a while (until 2007) to differentiate it from the "professional's choice" MBP more.

Apple is simply trying to move to a lower-power chip in order to keep the heat down on the EggFryerBook Pros. Rather than scrap a bad design, they're going to put a cooler chip inside it. And before you fanboys jump on me for saying 'Apple' and 'bad design' in the same paragraph, realize I'm saying the MBP is a bad design from an engineering perspective, and the exploding/swelling batteries are the result of excess heat as well.

@fjc8Not quite, Conroe just describes the Core 2 Extreme, the rest of the Core 2 Duo desktop processors didnt really have a code name, but the laptop ones were called Merim.

This story is completely inaccurate. Marked as such.Apple did not "make an immediate move to Merom-based systems". Absolutely nothing has been announced. The article simply lists the Merom chips that Intel has announced, and even admits that Apple has not yet made any announcements about their plans.Don't clutter up Digg's RSS feed with crap like this.

@ken G:If you have a "reliable" leak 5 minutes before the real thing you can still buy or sell stock. If you aren't stock trading, then I guess unless you count getting closer to the front of the line at the local Apple store, not much ;-)
