asskey (clever name): I didn't say I was going to run iTunes on Linux. 3rnesto & blackcow: does dissing my hardware make you feel better about yourselves?broomet: I've been a digger since Nov '05 and I love digg. I think your comments about us are f**ked up. Also, this laptop came with Vista. I installed Ubuntu over the top of it 45 minutes after UPS delivered the thing two weeks ago (No, no dual-boot). Unfortunately the task of getting Ubuntu running smoothly was going to take more time than I had, so I put Vista back on until....Spring Break, when I have some free time--then I can get back to happily running Linux as I have for the past year and a half.
Yeah, I did have a chip on my shoulder after some Apple bastard tells me to go to Dell for updated Apple drivers? And when the knowledge base article explains HOW TO IDENTIFY the manufacturer of your iPod. And I have worked in tech support call centers for over 5 years.Wouldn't you cop an attitude with someone who is giving you bulls**t answers? And I wasn't asking Apple to support my laptop hardware or USB hardware (WINDOWS), I don't want them to support my laptop's hardware. I want them to support their APPLE hardware with an Apple device driver if a supporting one is no longer packaged in Vista.PS Asstard -- An iPod IS Apple hardware and YOU are worthless. Why don't you work in tech support for a bit and then you will recogize s**tastic answers like "Look in the device manager to see who made your iPod". He could have just told me, "No Vista yet," and I would have accepted that. What I don't accept is him blaming my USB ports, him helping me figure out who manufactured my iPod, and him telling me to go to Dell for an iPod driver. A USB driver update? Sure, but not an iPod driver. The short of it is, Apple needs to address this quickly. More and more people are switching to Vista everyday, for better or worse and Apple's answer to incompatibility can not be "Call your computer manufacturer.
....like "go to Dell for ipod drivers" and "your usb port isn't high enough powered"... In spite of the fact it worked fine previously. And his knowledge base article that I didn't even "try" was simply explaining how to figure out who made your device by looking in the device manager. Yes, I know the iPod will show up without a driver as an Unknown Device, but I already know who manufactured it. If we were in there to install a driver great, but he basically was trying to shove me off onto Dell or someone else because he didn't have an answer.Again if he would have said "No Vista support yet" I would have asked for an ETA, thanked him and hung up. But when you dick around wasting everyone's time, it's useless. This guy obviously either didn't grasp my issue or didn't have the balls to say "You can't use it with Vista yet."The 7.1 upgrade released today doesn't help. Obviously the iPod/Vista compatibility is an issue for a growing number of people and Apple will have to address this, not simply refer every ipod user to the manufacturer of their laptop or PC.
Thanks moofer, hadn't seen that page before. We've started doing exactly what you suggested. To all others who commented, thanks. We had tried all of these suggestions, but there are a few function calls that are missing in safe mode, and disabling directdraw didn't fix the issue we run into. Thanks again.
I've been using iTunes since beta version of Vista (without iPod, just for webcasts) without any big problems. Now I installed the new Vista ready version, and it wont start, wow, nice Vista compatibility :)
I keep getting a total blackout of the GUI in iTunes 7 in Vista. Supposedly resizing the window makes them come back on so I'm going to try that now. I can't understand ppl who say "don't get Vista" though, since all machines now come with it. New laptop=Vista. Not my choice but hey, I like it. They may have copied OSX in a lot of ways but it's all the good bits they've swiped ;) Anyone know the WinKey+D Vista equivalent to show all your open windows at once?

This article begs to differ: <a class="user" href="http://news.zdnet.com/2100-3513_22-6164830.html">http://news.zdnet.com/2100-3513_22-6164830.html</a> (New iTunes version still not fully Vista-ready)
