blackfriarsinc.com — One of the rather interesting marketing aspects I've read about is the idea that the iPhone won't be tied to any specific carrier. Instead, it will be sold "unlocked", requiring you to insert a GSM subscriber identity (SIM) card

I can see it being offered through most carriers and also having the option to buy it direct from apple unlocked. Ideally I think that would be the best route to go with. Next in line: purchasing a Macbook Pro and getting a discount on an iPhone!

Even if the iPhone displaced some iPod sales, it's still a sale by Apple for a music player. Just as there are different iPod models, having an iPod Phone (iPhone) is no different than buying a Nano instead of the full size iPod.

sounds great on paper.however; it still wouldn't work on Verizon, they still rock cdma.also, the thing will cost $$$$$ , whereas a contracted phone from Cingular only costs $.i don't think it will fly, unless they do get subsidies from the cellular companies, sadly.

I still don't get why US carriers impose contracts *AND* lock phones. Sure, they give you a discount on a phone when you sign up, and sometimes you get the phone for free. But it's not like you get away with something when you cancel your contract: you get hit with fees. Is it really an extra punishment that your phone becomes a brick? Not really, not when you know that you'll get a free phone when you sign your next contract with your next carrier.Locking phones at best locks in people who finish their contract and switch to a pay-as-you-go plan. Since the customer has the phone locked to a specific network, they will for sure be buying minutes from them. But really, that's the only scenario in which locking phones makes any economic sense at all.

"Come on Apple: give the red-headed step children of the cell phone world a break and throw us a bone, too!"Probably not going to happen.

"@otomo: so, if the cdma standard is so restrictive, why do people use it?"People don't use it. Carriers use it. And you've answered your own question as to why carriers use it.
