Then how do apps like Shazam work? I imagine some file is being uploaded over EDGE/3G to their servers. Unless some processing is being done on the phone itself to lower bandwidth... I got no clue how it works. But I'd imagine Google would also take a similar approach with their app. Compress the voiceprint down and upload it, or decode it directly on the phone... however the hell it works. All I know is that Shazam works pretty damn well on EDGE, my iPhone takes longer to load images than it does to find a song I just put its mic up to.

Not to be an android fanboy or anything... but Android DOES have speech recognition in the platform... (right now, I think it's a private API - but that will change soon) - so writing this application on Android would be about 2 seconds of work - use voice recognition to get a search query - make sure user verifies what you recognized is correct - and then fire off an intent for a search with that information in it. That speech recognition thing built into the platform is kind of not getting much play - but I can hit the button and say the name of any of my contacts and it will let me call them (without having pre-recorded any audio or anything like on most cheap cell phones) and I can even voice dial by saying numbers... which is a pretty cool feature.

How does this embarrass Apple? Google either did not even have an application to submit to Apple, or they assumed that because they are Google they get preferential treatment.

yup just like a crappy launch of mobile me destroyed apple. I find it funny that when something fails with Microsoft people moan and groan but when something fails or flails with Apple people just say "oh, its ok, its apple, they are so cool we don't need to belly ache"*written on my macbook*
