macworld.com — While it’s true that Apple has significantly grown its share of the desktop operating system market since the release of Windows Vista in November of 2006, the company’s market share remains below 10 percent, and it actually dropped in the first quarter of 2009, according to Gartner’s Worldwide PC Shipment report.

I'm a Mac user. The mini is underpowered for the money, and uses laptop components in a desktop machine. The iMac is an all-in-one, and also uses laptop components in a desktop machine. The Pro is nice, but expensive and overkill for a lot of people. There are definitely gaps in the current hardware lineup.

PC stands for personal computer. I think even a mac would qualify under that justification. But no you are wrong, I considered strongly on a macbook when purchasing my last computer. I opted out for a few reason, extensions are hard to find the regular macbook, there is no vga, dvi port, no way for me to place it in a docking station. These are things i need and use. I use my laptop as a desktop at work and home via a port replicator, i like the full keyboard mouse and monitor. But when on the road i take my hardware with me. That and the price point nixed mac immediately. I hate windows though and only use it when forced (ie: work). So i went onto dells refurb site and bought a Latitude XT tablet. Core2duo, the works. Even have aluminum casing like the mac boys love. It has docking station options, video out options, touch function capability and came with bluetooth. I opted out of getting the windows OS and had it shipped bare as the hardware, with no OS. Installed linux and im rolling. So to make your point, no you do not have to go PC "ie windows" if you dont want a mac. Apples largest competitor i would think would then be hardware sellers, such as Dell, since Apple lost my business, and Dell gained it. MS made nothing off me. Granted this may not be the norm, but its usually for yes, even you mac boys, to not know all of the possible options when pc shopping.oh and i bought my latitude with a three year full parts/labor warranty for 800.00 out the door with second day air shipping.Just a point to show that your comment didnt necessarily hold value.

Yeah... this argument is one of those that just won't die. It's like the old "one button mouse" bulls**t that hasn't been true for over a decade. If you want to buy a bargain basement pre-built computer from any of the popular manufacturers.... then you need to look towards HP, Dell, etc. Apple simply does not service this market. The parts are s**tty. The materials are s**tty. Many corners will be cut.And NONE of the major pre-built computer manufacturers comes close to the cost of building one yourself because you're paying them for the time and labor involved in building the thing for you.Apple serves a higher end market, with higher end products (like it or not... they are)... all of which meet similar prices as you'd find from HP or Dell.

Look at the quality of software too. Sure, there are fewer titles available for mac, but have you actually seen what mac has to offer. A complete and integrated suite of creative apps, BUILT-IN. Numerous chat clients, productivity softwares for every kind of user, none of which the PC really have. So if PCs run 95% of the software out there, think: how much of this software is actually useful to me? Also consider, how much of that 95% is viruses, malware, spyware because there are about as many of those as there are legitimate software titles. So does that 95% really matter? I buy computers because of what they can do for me and how much work I can get done on them, not necessarily because they have a bigger list of softwares available to them.

Interesting statement. It appears that your argument is that people buy Windows whether they know it's what they want or not. I find this is actually true because it's extremely difficult to make an informed decision with PCs. With soo many brands, models and price categories, most PC users just walk in asking for the 'best' machine thinking that it would be the machine that will work for them for the long haul, when that's not entirely true. Generally, the MOST informed PC buyers I know, don't purchase brands, they build their own, because PCs do cost more than the sum of their parts most of the time. When it comes to Mac, it's really easy to make an informed decision, because the whole Apple Store is there to help you through the entire consumer experience, provided you came on a day that they weren't understaffed, it can get kinda crazy in there sometimes.Which brings me to your definition of 'informed.' Notice that people make informed decisions all the time, but rarely on the same product. People use what they want to use becuase they know it's going to work for them. That's something that both PCs and Macs are capable of.

You really don't know a lot about people do you? There is no Apple Tax, only people who fail to look at the big picture when investing in a computer. There's more to computers than hardware and price...

You would think that but it is not the case. Home Basic UI is even different to in using vs Ultimate. Drivers are fully up to date and I previously had other PCs with varying versions of windows Vista. Only the home Basic was a serious PITA to use and maintain. Even money this is where Vista got its bad rap from.I can't install Ultimate on the laptop as I don't have a license to do it. As I am mainly mac now I don't feel like shelling out that cash for a laptop that gets little use now.

"most users can't justify paying an extra 300-500 just to avoid a few problems"But they are willing to pay that much or more to Geek Squad when (not if) Windows goes t**s-up because of those few problems. Can you say "false economy"?
