@airquotesWow, I don't really have a point to make, I just wanted to say that when people like you speak, people like me cringe.

@ rolf@ boondoggle"Apple still had billions of dollars back when Microsoft invested $150 in Apple stock, which was nowhere near 20% of the company."[[[Umm typo? or are you serious? And no, in 1997, apple was struggling and was definitely feared to go out of business.]]]"Your position is so fraught with errors and silliness. Gates did not buy 20% of the stock. Microsft bought "some" stock in exchange for an agreement on patents. It was largely symbolic. In terms of the bottom line to Apple it made very little difference. System 7 and 8 are dark ages compared to os x, and so long ago as to be 100 irrelevant."[[[I guess the 20% was something that I read today at a s**t website but dont get all high and mighty. There was an undisclosed amount that was also transfeered to apple from microsoft amounting in hundreds of millions of dollars ON TOP of their stock purchase. Your arrogance astounds me.]]]http://news.com.com/MS+to+invest+150+million+in+Apple/2100-1001_3-202143.html

Apple grew 30%, HP grew 25% or something like that. For the #1 company (HP) to have that big of a quarterly growth in shipments is MUCH MUCH more impressive than for Apple to have that big of a quarterly growth. But of course with Apple being the trendy company right now no one will say that, and I'm certain this post will get dugg down because I pointed that out.

Boy is this a scary thought. There are that many dumb@$$e$ out there, willing to pay for over-priced shiny toys that can be purchased more cheaply and with more features elsewhere? Bizarre. Dugg down for being bad news.

@NSResponderTechnically speaking Gateway was third in the US. Ahead of Apple (5th) and Toshiba (4th).--------Actually, the _real_ story here is not about Apple. Yes, I'm an Apple fan, but I'm also a numbers nut.And the numbers say that the real story here is HP.HP's _growth in shipments_ exceeded Apple's _total shipments_. Think about that.It is like you and I both get a raise... but the amount of my raise is bigger than your whole paycheque....---------And actually, the massive 30% gain of Apple means that instead of being 65000 shipments behind Toshiba, they are now... wait for it...64000 shipments behind Toshiba. So Apple will catch up and overtake Toshiba for the fourth place spot in about... oh... 16 years. Move along, nothing to see here, come back in 2023.---------But anyway, I'd thought we'd been seeing stories about how HP had taken Dell's throne for years now?True story:At work they were shuffling PCs around and the project management office ordered me a new one (from Dell). I'd tell them to get stuffed, except the new one has two 19 inch monitors instead of one 17 inch monitor. On Wednesday it turned up (about a month after it was ordered). On Friday one of our IT people turned up to install it. Fantastic. Only to discover that the PC Dell has given us does not actually have the ability to run two monitors.... D'oh!You know, for all the years Dell has been doing this, you'd think they would have their act together by now.---------In closing, I hope the new breed of HP fanboys will not be as smug and up themselves as the Dell fanboys were.

Apple's share of laptop sales has been estimated to be much higher...Also PC sales include all sales to companies, and for things like cash registers. So it masks how much growth there is in the consumer space.

The point I'm trying to make is that there should be two sets of numbers when talking about marketshare--one for overall use (business, etc.), and one for home computing use. I think if the numbers were broken down to what's used in homes, Apple would have a much much higher share.

@Szandorwell I guess I meant "lately"...oops@rickcarsondude..you know if you read what I had written, am not even comparing Apple's hardware to MS's software. Am just pointing out that MS's software and hardware in general are expensive too. I use OS X, Linux(Ubuntu) and XP Pro personally and I do concur that OS X is currently the best OS in the market. The price of OS X if am not wrong is heavily subsidized by the hardware though. That is what I had read some while back. You know we both are pointing out the same things. You are doing it with some facts and some analogies, am just pointing out what I have been seeing in a very general statement albeit in my very mediocore English (its not my first language...:) )

@NSResponder: I've never used a Zune, so I can't comment on whether it's a good product or not. That's not the real question here, though. The real question is: have YOU ever used a Zune?

And yet I have never gave a single dollar to Apple except for my Apple II more than 20 years ago.Microsoft has sucked thousands directly and indirectly out of me in that time. And I've managed to give a few thousand to HP in that time too.Microsoft and HP has enhanced my life. Apple has not.Microsoft and HP have effected EVERYONE. Apple has not. That is what being a player means.
