ipodminusitunes.blogspot.com — Linux using iPod owners take note: the new iPod generation does not work with third party tools. Apple has deliberately engineered protection against third party applications. Developers behind gtkpod and winamp have joined up in order to solve the mystery of Apple's new protected iTunesDB.

"ton of money"? Hassle? Sounds like you weren't planning to buy ANY mp3 player (of which ipods are the easiest to use), so apple didn't lose anything here.

but thats the whole point, these larger models are for people with video, who have big video collections and want to watch them on the move. Why - thats beyond me. But my music collection is over 80gig so I'm greatful for the 160gig model.

If its only used for data integrity then why does it report zero songs on the device after using a third party app?

sure they should. But this isn't the point. The point is a user who wants to use it for linux shouldn't buy it in the first place, and should encourage product development for products that do suit their needs. I like and use apple, but I'll be the first to say that if something on it doesn't do what I want, why would I pay for something that the product doesn't say it will do? If I suddenly didn't have access to development tools on my mac, out it would go. I'll put my money elsewhere. If they took it away, I would find someone who DOES want what it does and sell it, then use that money to purchase the environment I want.
