informationweek.com — According to users commenting on Apple's own discussion groups, the MacBook firmware update makes a notebook's fans run continuously, albeit at a low speed. When necessary, the fans will speed up to move more air through the case.

I had no idea that the fans on my macbook were always on until I read this. Thats how quiet it is. Really nothing to worry about so far.

Very poor summary by submitter. The article goes on to mention that many users perceived no change in fan noise.

@TheCheeks: Mac users are the Scientologist of computing.

Thanks for your critique. It's actually just a quote from the article. Did you REALLY read it?

I have a 2 month old black MacBook, i dont hear the fan at all. It doesnt become more warm than my previous laptop. I keep my laptop on for 5-10 hours a day and i never hear this fan that everyone is complaining about. But i know someone who has the MacBook pro, and you can clearly hear the fan and the laptop gets too warm too soon to even place on your lap. I think that the newer produced MacBooks have less of this problem than the 1st generation ones.

The mooing was never really very loud, and it went away on my MacBook after the update. So, um ... yay?

I've not only run the hardware check (came back totally clean), but I've had the logic board (and apparently a bunch of other stuff) replaced by Apple. I've had one random shutdown since the firmware update, but still have a few kernel panics per day. And no, the operating environment is not too hot. I like a cold house, so it's pretty cool in here (70-72 degrees F). I don't think Apple has the RSD issue solved yet. And I think the kernel panics are related to my AirPort card. It's the only thing that shows up in the panic log.

My Macbook was a few hours away form going back to Apple because of random shutdown problelms. I loaded the firmware updates and I am keeping my fingers crossed that this will stop the shutdowns - kinda doubt it because this damned machine had shutdowns when it was running cool.Having the fans run all the time is not a problem for me.
