apple.com— Apple has added the open source Xvid codec to its list of QuickTime components on Apple.com. Maybe Xvid will finally make it into iTunes and the AppleTV.

@Quix:What your link shows is what many experts have been saying, namely, h264 is great for low bitrates (streaming video, etc), but XviD and h264 are virtually indistinguishable at higher bitrates, such as those used for transcoding DVD movies for archiving. The benefits of h264 are still balanced by a big disadvantage at the moment: you need a beefier processor to decode h264. I find my PIII-800 HTPC has no problems decoding SD XviD, but it stutters when decoding the same resolution h264.
Oh BS. That's like saying if they support mp3 they are support piracy. A file format means nothing on its own and the ONLY reason Apple doesn't support it is they want your money. They want you to buy videos from their store period."If the AppleTV were to support the common formats that are available for download via bittorrent, the studios could claim AppleTV is just another piracy device."Again mp3s are on Bittorent, jpgs are on Bittorent. Why does AppleTV support them?Should Apple not sells computers anymore because people may use they to pirate media? Stop repeating MPAA and RIAA propoganda and stop making excuses for Apple.
"I'm taking odds on Apple allowing iPhone to be a remote control"Now that would be brilliant! I've been wondering for years why Apple hasn't released a wireless iTunes controller (for use with Airport Express). Perhaps the iPhone will finally be it.Now if only there were a way to control my AV receiver's volume with it...If only the iPhone had real touch-screen GPS functionality (and street mapping software), it would be the ultimate all-in-one device.
Here are excerpts from DivX for OS X latest license:SOFTWARE INSTALLATION: Components bundled with the Software may report to Licensor and/or its affiliates the installation status of certain marketing offers, such as toolbars, and also generalized installation information, such as language preference and operating system version, to assist Licensor in its product development. No personal information will be communicated to DivX, Inc. or its affiliates during this process. Licensor may in the future offer additional components (such as a toolbar) through our version checking/update system. And video professionals and even advanced end users will smile at:NO TRANSCODING: You are prohibited from using the Software with software or hardware products whose purpose is to "transcode" or convert DivX video or DivX Media Format content into an alternate format.DivX is actually banned from couple of production houses I know which works on high end projects. It is labelled as security risk and also a commercial risk because of no-transcode policy.

Everyone for mac is talking about Perian.... or however its spelled... but if you are a windows user, let me recommend The KMPlayer... it plays pretty much damn near anything and is featured pack (for free) :-)http://www.codecs.com/download/KMPlayer.htmNote: This is not KMPlayer you may have seen from linux....

I think it's gonna take a while. Unless somebody dedicates their Easter weekend to hacking. Let's hope so........

Yep, I've tried the Beta version and it works great. I only need to know if HD xvid/divx plays well on appletv with perian...
