engadget.com — Apple unveiled an update to its .Mac package of subscription online apps today. Most notably, .Mac now integrates with the just-announced iPhoto '08, offering synchronization between iPhoto and a web-based online gallery viewable "in any browser you like" (we should certainly hope so!).

ISP provided web space is usually well under 10GB. Last time I checked, my current ISP was still giving me a whopping 5 MEGS of hosting. Flickr, Gmail and other "free" web alternative all integrate banner ads to your stuff, and some are worse than other in this regard. Sure you can get 50GB of web hosting for free, but your visitors will have to endure annoying flash pop-ups and casino ads, and besides the bandwidth limitations on these are ridiculously low and they don't allow external linking of media like images. And don't talk to me about "ad blockers". If everyone was using them, these "free" solutions would disappear. Maybe you're ok with a world where the technically illiterate is bombarded with ads everywhere they look while the geek elite avoids them, but I'm not.I'm not saying advertising is evil and shouldn't exist. If you're too poor to afford ad-free solutions, well fine, the free options are there. But for the content I personally create and publish, I'd rather pay $99 a year to avoid contributing to the advertiser pollution on the internet.

"You can get a GoDaddy hosting for $3.95 a month and a domain name for about $6.99 a year. That's still a lot cheaper than .Mac by nearly half."But you also get half the space (5GB). Sure GoDaddy has some better plans, but my point is that as usual this kind of example is exaggerated.

$99 for .Mac is such a rip off. I wish they would update their apps to be compitable to sync with your own server or .Mac would be really nice. It all could be controlled by a system pref. that would allow you to type in your own ftp server, but of course why would they do that when you can but your own server that has 200gb for only $20 more than .Mac.

Damn, there goes another 9GB from my hard drive! Since there is a local mirror of the iDisk, my hard drive just got smaller!
