pogue.blogs.nytimes.com — Last week, Apple released a new version of its iLife suite—its $80 package containing iPhoto, iMovie, iWeb and GarageBand. The suite also comes preinstalled on every new Mac. The enhancements in iPhone, iWeb and GarageBand are great. But iMovie ‘08 is an utter bafflement.

Dammit. I just checked and my iDVD '08 isn't working either. Sneaky...

It's way easier for real people, who have never used an NLE, to figure out. What is hard about selecting a bit of movie to use and dragging it into your project? much simpler than previous multiple cutting efforts required to use a fragment of a long clip. It also automatically can normalize clip volume and you can increase brightness in an overly dark video with ease.

Thanks, I hadn't heard of this. I notice on their site they're discontinuing this Sept 1. Glad I saw your mention.

A couple of thoughts. Surely it would have been easier for Apple to upgrade their existing iMovie than rewrite it from the ground up, so you couldn't really call it laziness. If they came up with a system that makes for faster, easier movie editing, then I suppose the place for that would be at the entry level of their movie editors, under the "i" moniker. They still make the same number of versions of movie editors as they had before, so it's placed about right. Making it easy as possible for people to get into software, I think, has always been the point of the iLife suite. Keep in mind that this software comes free with all new macs and for the rest of us, it's still a suite of some pretty awesome programs for $79 (CDN). As part of the free market system you have to accept that people can make and sell whatever they like... and you can choose to buy it or not.. if there's something you like better, buy it.

No, Apple f**ked it up. You used to be able to do all of this s**t in iMovie. I don't want to do s**t in 8 different apps. Add my effects, plugins and transitions back in iMovie 08. Usually you take software a stop forward, not 3 steps back. GarageBand...lose the f**kin' wood theme already. Jesus Christ.

iMovie 08 is total bulls**t. We've lost most of the effects, transitions and titles. We've lose export capabilities and audio splitting, etc. All you can do is slap on a title and add music. Apple f**ked this one up big time. We don't want to spend hundreds on Final Cut. Fix iMove assh**es.
