Oh yes it can. I've been watching "Planet Earth" at 1280x720/5mbps/24fps/h.264 on my ATV over the past few days and it is gorgeous and smooth.

personally i can't see why people would actually spend the time trying to convert the Apple TV into a fully functioning Mac system - fine for experiments so you can say "I managed to do it", but how many of your average consumers will do this?
