You can create bookmarks for arbitrary locations in Map, as long as there is a road. Simply search for a road in whatever view you are looking at, it will find the local road, and you can bookmark that. Works better on really small roads, if you search for larger highways the bookmark goes in the middle of the whole expanse.
I too had this problem. My phone did not freeze up on me before applying 1.0.2. I tried everything to fix it (restored multiple times, etc). Eventually the WiFi on my iPhone gave up the ghost and I had to get it repaired. I got a loaner iPhone, applied 1.0.2 to it and it is now freezing. Suffice it to say I will not apply 1.0.2 on my iPhone when it comes back from repair.
