What's better?Giving it to Apple so they can presumably "dispose" it..._OR_Sell it on eBay and make sure you can at least make the first payment when your credit card bill comes with the $2000+ charge you spent on a brand-new Mac with all those accessories the dumbass at the "genius bar" recommended?Choices...

I believe that from now on you are going to be charged a disposal tax when you BUY a new piece of electronic equipment, to pay for the cost of safe disposal at the end of its life. Companies are going to have to take the equipment back to dispose, by law. This is part of the RoHS/WEEE regulations being implemented in the EU and Japan. The USA doesn't want to do it, but will have a severe dent in its export market if it doesn''t tag along.

It's long since started. The early personal computers can fetch a pretty penny. Search ebay for Imsai or Altair. A Northstar Horizon S-100 system that I once had is up there now for $200. In the 1980s I stuck that one at the curb for the garbage collectors.

Before you give them too much credit, The Apple Board of Directors have been resisting pressure from shareholders to widen their recycling program (read the recent 10-K distributed to shareholders, the Board recommended to vote against the motion). As others have mentioned, many computer/office retailers take back old equipment regardless of make and purchase history, a policy some shareholders would like the Apple stores to follow as well. This would leave one to believe that their commitment to being "green" is merely a marketing ploy.
