seattletimes.nwsource.com — "If your school requires you to use some Windows-only software, you can simply launch Parallels and run Windows within a separate window in your Mac OS X environment, or restart the machine from Windows using Boot Camp," Carlson reports.

Hardly an unbiased source, dont you think? The guy admits that he loves getting "lost" in the drugstore's stationery aisle (ie he's gay, a market demographic macs have always dominated in) and he admits he's always been a closet Mac booster but decided he'd "come out" this year.He also makes his living writing a Mac "how-to" article in the seattle times, and has done so for the last 4 years.<a class="user" href="http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/practicalmac/">http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/practicalmac/</a>Once again, not an unbiased source. Besides, anyone buying a macbook pro with the undiagnosed lockup/shutdown problem is just asking for trouble. Everyone knows you never, ever, ever buy version 1.0 of any apple hardware.

I like Macs. Well, just OS X. So, because just about NO ONE has mentioned this...Buy a cheap but good laptop (Dell, Thinkpad), and install OSx86! TADA! Viola! You have native Mac on a standard laptop/PC!<a class="user" href="http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page">http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page</a>Done it before, works perfectly. The only drawback is some of the hardware support. Once you get it right though, it runs like a dream.

This is good news for Mac fanboys!

"I don't think most schools can afford Macbooks with Parralels and a seperate windows licence."Are you kidding? Microsoft practically gives their products away to schools-- they've adopted the "hook 'em young" philosophy of the tobacco companies.I'm sure Parallels would offer some sort of volume discount to help the chances of making a sufficiently large sale, as well.

I honestly don't know what programs the university would be distributing that would require 128MB dedicated RAM for the GP. Unless you are doing heavy-duty 3d modeling or video rendering, the 64MB shared memory in a Macbook should be more than adequate. Heck, I can play a 3D FPS (Tremulous) on my Macbook at over 100fps.Technically, my Macbook is not within the required specs ordained by my University. However, they also failed to mention that the programs for which I thought I needed a Windows-capable machine to run (Chemdraw, Datastudio, etc) were also available for Mac. In fact, when I first asked them about this they flat-out denied it. However, the download page does not lie.Unless you need a dedicated GPU or PCMCIA slots, a Macbook should be fine.

bs - there is nothing and I mean nothing that linux cannot that any school demands - schools should not even give proprietary anything a second thought - if they don't use linux then the people who run the school should go back to school themselves and learn how to do something instead of shuffle papers and keep track of licenses.

"better build quality, and better looks."I know, everyone else has already said so, but this is just so funny and blatently wrong.I have never seen a computer built as solidly as a mac.as for looks, how can you live with yourself saying that.

Looks like Vanguard went with his own solution and decided to burn the laptop and blame Apple.<a class="user" href="http://digg.com/apple/MacBook_Joins_the_Club_of_Igniting_Laptops">http://digg.com/apple/MacBook_Joins_the_Club_of_Igniting_Laptops</a><a class="user" href="http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/laptops/macbook-joins-the-club-of-igniting-laptops-199368.php">http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/laptops/macbook-joins-the-club-of-igniting-laptops-199368.php</a>Nice catch, hinkbot. I think Gizmodo needs to remove this bogus story.

Does anyone care to find out which is the nearest Apple store to our friend vanquish here? I'm sure the Apple guys would like to know about the likely fraud they have on their hands.

My MacBook seems to get pretty hot in the area where his supposedly "exploded". I'm wondering if I should be concerned, the area where the esc key is, is noticeably and repeatably warmer that any other part of the computer.

@ sporkmongerThat would be Westfarms. I used to live near Westbrook, and I can tell you It's a pretty long drive.
