sdreader.com — Apple maintains records of stolen iPod serial numbers. Apple's iTunes software records the serial number of the last connected iPod. Apple sells songs to people that enter their billing information into the iTunes software. So why isn't Apple doing anything to prevent the sale of songs to the person with your stolen iPod?

This has probably been said already, but I don't wanna read all the comments. Someone who steals an ipod is probably too poor to download songs off itunes. That and they just stole an ipod, you really think they're gonna legally download music?

Besides, if your iPod gets stolen, Apple will likely get another sale out of you...N.

"@tgmd track the version of the hardware in use, what music on what platforms people like."And you don't see a problem with that?

because how can you prove that a crooked person didn't sell someone their ipod for cash and then turn around and call it stolen to try and get it back?

I don't know what Apple does with S/Ns, but I can tell you how much money they make on songs. I have an album on the iTunes music store (Look up "So Wide," by Marc Alan Schelske, if you're interested) and I know exactly what Apple keeps when a track sells. You pay $0.99. I get $0.67. My distribution company gets $0.09. That leaves $0.23 for Apple. Now I know that big record companies are able to negotiate a better rate, but usually the better rate for them comes out of the artist's share. My point is this: even though $0.23/song isn't much, when you sell over a billion songs, that ain't chump change. What does this have to do with Apple and stolen iPods? Nothing. My only point is this: When you post a comment on a website, don't post declarations of truth that are just things you heard somewhere. This whole thread is full of them. Cite a source or keep your mouth closed. The quality of the information on the internet would improve dramatically if people weren't so compelled to spew made-up or second-hand horse-droppings.

What's w/ the whining about Apple tracking WHO OWNS an iPod to the iPod itself (serial number). There are these things called warranties... this is typical business practice.
