I don't have any idea how Apple plans to leverage Twitter (should they end up acquiring it), but here's my thoughts: They could possibly integrate the functionality with a desktop app that ships with Leopard, and gives Apple a fairly strong toe-hold in the social networking space (admittedly, I don't know how this benefits Apple's current stable of products, but maybe that isn't their intent).Remember, when Apple began building mp3 players and selling music, that really had nothing to do with their current business lines. Although admittedly, I don't see Twitter as creating a viable revenue stream like mp3's and mp3 players.

I agree 100%. The Web 2.0 explosion has brought us a spate of sites of varying practicality, but I think people get so enamored with the ability to access people's information in real-time, the Twitters of the world experience overnight success. Monetization of these sites is much more elusive than a devoted user base. The idea of 1. Get User Base, 2. ?, 3. Profit is beginning to be debunked.Once a more compelling product comes along people will jump ship.

Didn't News Corp prove anything by wasting $580 million on MySpace? All of these social networks are just fads until the next one comes along.
