NotebookReview.com — After first saying they'll charge $4.99 for the 802.11n update to Core 2 Duo MacBook and MacBook Pros and then changing that to $1.99 it is now the best price you can get -- FREE! The download patch is available today.

Um.. article poster shoulda linked to this page: <a class="user" href="http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/firmware_hardware/airportextremeupdate2007001.html">http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/firmware_hardware/airportextremeupdate2007001.html</a>

@rasterbatorUnfortunately it's not as simple as a firmware update. The antennae technology is completely different. I've got a Belkin 802.11n draft router, and I got a serious boost in signal strength/range still using old 802.11g hardware in my old laptop. So...you won't see a huge difference in throughput, but if my Belkin router is any indication with an 802.11n router you should at least get better range.BTW you are correct about not seeing a difference with your Linksys-G router.

I think it was more the slippery slope theory. If apple was able to do it with this small thing, then they might try to do it with larger things and other manufacturers if they saw apple getting away with it would start as well.

The security update is a DIFFERENT update. I just got mine this morning. I applied the security update earlier this week.

OK, let's correct two misperceptions:1. Apple most certainly has said that it will charge for the 802.11n update for early Core 2 Duo Macs and here is one of the many links where Apple has said this to media:<a class="user" href="http://backstage.ilounge.com/index.php/backstage/comments/oh-about-that-80211n-card-in-your-c2d-mac/">http://backstage.ilounge.com/index.php/backstage/comments/oh-about-that-80211n-card-in-your-c2d-mac/</a>2. Today's update isn't even for Core 2 Duo machines. It's for Core Duo machines. And, it doesn't give anyone 802.11n.:<a class="user" href="http://www.macworld.com/news/2007/01/26/extreme/index.php">http://www.macworld.com/news/2007/01/26/extreme/index.php</a>
