[KNOWN IT ALL ELITIST] Yea, definitely not impressed...while the linear scale is constant in all directions around any point, thus preserving the angles and the shapes of small objects (which makes the projection conformal), the "artists" use of the Mercator projection distorts the size and shape of large objects, as the scale increases from the Equator to the poles, where it becomes infinite.[/KNOWN IT ALL ELITIST]
why what? why anything? why you? why me? how did we get here? what are we supposed to do? do we have a purpose? what effect do we have on each other's lives? i suggest you watch a german film titled Run Lola Run to learn a thing or two or three or five before you ask such STUPID questions!

Ignorant, western-centric thought. Mercator isn't the best, it just feeds egos in the western world by making the landmass seem larger than it is (and thusly making others seem smaller -> Africa/Asia/S. America).http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gall%E2%80%93Peters_p ...
