media.www.lsureveille.com — The time has come to relax our laws on marijuana use and possession. Admitting one's past use of marijuana is trendy in modern America. It's even a little presidential. Barack Obama smoked his fair share of cannabis. John Kennedy, Howard Dean and John Kerry all owned up to the dirty deed as well. But it's more than just politicians.

well, first what would have to happen would be a change in political viewpoints and in the media.

My point remains the same. In a free society, the government lacks the right to tell the public what they can and cannot do with their own bodies and/or other consenting adults. Just as the government has no right to pass legislation regarding consumption of alcohol, tobacco, grease, MSG, psilocybin, aspirin, Tylenol, caffeine or a myriad of other harmful substances they do not have the right to legislate a person's right to consume cannabis. Such legislation negates the concept of a "free" society. Liberty and justice for all, indeed. The fact is, the laws will change as the reform movement continues to pick up steam. Consumption of cannabis, despite legislation continues to rise and, as when it was legal before, there has not been a sharp increase in crime associated with marijuana use. There has however, since the beginning of marijuana prohibition, been an increase in crime, both violent and otherwise associated with the black market created by prohibition.Where I live there was a time when it was illegal to sell bongs, pipes, counter-culture magazines, etc. Now head shops are popping up everywhere. Its a small step in an inevitable direction.Marijuana consumption is a minor issue yet the prohibition is costing billions in taxpayer money, dollars better spent in health care or education. Not to mention the countless police man-hours and an ever increasing tally of police lives wasted on an unwinnable war against personal freedoms. The evidence of the lack of societal harms it is bountiful solely in the statistics of its use. With such a broad range of regular and former smokers, and the fact your society hasn't collapsed into reefer madness induced anarchy should be proof enough. Every day, more and more people are seeing how little danger marijuana actually poses despite how much propaganda is issued to support the baseless theory of the ills of marijuana use that people, seemingly like yourself, are so willing to soak up as the Holy Gospel Truth. I could cite countless studies pertaining directly to the issue of marijuana use and its imagined harms to society but it would simply fall on deaf ears. Just as I will never change your mind, you will never change the fact there people who believe it is their right to smoke it.More than anything, you certainly must have bigger concerns facing yourself and your country than whether or not your neighbor smokes a smelly green plant.(Oh, and sorry for calling you a Christian. The references to God, morality, saving yourself for marriage, and looking for a spouse from the same religious background threw me off. ^_^ My apologies. For what its worth, I didn't mean it in a negative way.)

I would love it to be legal but... What about the people that make their living buy selling it on the streets or even on a larger quantity. Whether or not it is legal, it's their source of income. What will happen if we legalize and don't make it easy for those who already sell it to become a businessman in the field. What will they start selling instead of marijuana, definitely not something safer. I hope the government can figure this one out. Anyone have any suggestions?

Bottom line: if we are to continue punishing the use of marijuana as severely as we currently are, we must then reexamine the use of alcohol. Absolutley every piece of evidence shows that marijuana is less obtrusive on society, even more so than cigarette smoking. Maybe it will take speaking a language that politicians will understand: "Protect the rights of the Hemp farmer! He votes too."

Legalizing not just marijuana, but a plethera of other drugs would bring the price down drasticaly and make it much less profitable to produce. Therefore, our problem with crime in the inner cities goes down. Case in point: In prison the price of any drug is multiplied 2-300 times. A very profitable venture for any invester. The price of any drug that is legalized will go down to the tune of 100% at least. Kind of hard for drug lords to convince peole to risk there lives and commit violant acts for a product that can be purchased for pennies on the dollar at a government run depot. Not to mention the amount of tax revenue that can be used to help treat addicts.A majority of the marijuana that is smoked in the US is grown in the US anyway. It's a Great way to help farmers with crops that cant compete in the world market. Just my thoughts on the subject & I dont even smoke it.
