news.cnet.com— The iPhone's lead over smartphone upstart Android may be short-lived, according to an industry watcher's predictions.

"The iPhone could still be the single most popular smartphone model."So what? In the cell phone business, the individual sales figures for each model is far less important than capturing market share for your entire brand. Apple won't be able to compete with variety by pushing something that lacks it. Ultimately, it's variety that determines a company's market share in the phone market. You can't sell the same identical phone to all five continents at the same high prices and expect to capture market share away from those other brands who got their market share by providing global customers with variety.
Google doesn't do industrial design, the phone manufacturers that choose their free operating system do. So they aren't spreading themselves thin at all, everyone is collaborating on this project.
You know I'll be the first to joke about Apple and some of their marketing campaigns, but their Iphone is a hit plain and simple. After using it a bit its amazing how well the touchscreen works, there are apps galore, and its extremely intuitive. We have given managers at our work Iphones and they've been through them all. Every single one of them not only loves the Iphone, but we never have to repeat to them how to do things with it. I've seen the current Android OS phones. Its not even close. The only reason Android could exceed the Iphone is due to the limitation on carriers.
Hi. I'm an "industry watcher." I make up s**t for a living and people listen to me for no apparent reason. I get on the front page of big news sites by taking baseless wild guesses. I am the counterpart to the skeptic, and like the skeptics, I am always wrong.I also use Macs because I think clicking on colorful bouncing icons is "utilizing technology." I get paid a lot of money so I can buy new colorful icons to click. I also work in an office full of pock-marked fatasses who all use Macs and unholster their iPhones with a flourish at Starbucks and hold it at waist level pretending to check their stock prices when women walk in.you see what I did there?
I have both and iphone (work) and a G1 (mine). I was grooving on the iphone since its first version, endlessly coveting that shiny sexy thing. When I finally got one, I thought, what a bunch of hype this thing is. First, almost every app costs money. Second, most of the apps on the iphone are free on the android, AND they work better. I was initially jelouse of the sheer number of apps for iphone v. android, but then when I got to the app store I though, good grief how many tip calculators do I need. The calendar on the iphone SUCKS and even the app calendars are not very impressive to me. Add to that the fact that they cost an obscene amount of money and its a no win for apple on that front. Conversely on the android platform there is a great selection of free or nominal (.99) calendars you can get, try out, discard if not to your approval and reload others and be out maybe $4 if anything.I cannot tether my iphone to my laptop.I cannot send MMS on my iphone. And the worst of all is that I can only run 1 stinking app at a time. What the hell apple? It is very shiny though. iphone does have a great music player, and there is the shiny factor, the itunes store is nice, overall speaking, for me, having both, I prefer my android in all but the looks department.Kind of like getting that hot girlfriend you've been crushing on for years only to find out that pretty is the only thing she's got going for her...
