The G1 is T-Mobile's name for the HTC Dream.

No headphone jack. That sucks.

To everyone bitching about the keyboard... Guess what! A version with a keyboard exists and is available in your local tmobile store TODAY! That's right TODAY you can have this wonderful phone. However, I will have to wait because I don't want a big keyboard, I want an on screen keyboard. See what they did there? They made everyone happy.

or all of us early adopters of T-Mobile's G1, does anyone think there will be a subsidized (cheap) upgrade path to the G2, assuming it hits the US market?

Negotiate with Vodafone. Fill out your details on their online shop (as if you're about to buy it) then stop on the billing screen and close it, cancelling your order. They will phone you up and say why did you cancel - tell them you can't afford it or that you've had a better offer, they will offer you a lower price for the tariff.
