macenstein.com — …because it’s frickin’ HUGE! Actually, the engineers over at the Part Foundry who have created this GPS module for the iPhone, claim that it is “tiny” (the camera adds 15 pounds, apparently) and the unsightly guts we see now will be packaged in a sleek plastic enclosure by the time it ships in February

Because then you'd get all the "is that a Bluetooth receiver in your pocket..." jokes.

There is a GPS in an iPaq. The iPhone is not much smaller. The device in the photo could be made smaller.

Because i want a phone and an ipod in one device. I already own a tom tom and that does the job very well and has a seperate battery. I dont mind that i have to carry something extra!

How about a phone with GPS BUILT-IN?? And 3G... And a decent camera/videorecorder... They are out there, I happen to have one - A year ago.

Obviously you have the politics section blocked too. Seems pretty obvious to me why they didn't include a GPS receiver. You already have two pretty powerful signal sources that are rf sources crammed in that device with a small antenna opening. I'm going to guess this has a high likelihood of interfering with the gps reception making it less than desirable given the unit has the potential of future expansion with a NEMA compatible bluetooth receiver.

It sucks because its slow and will be slow forever. Cracking it gets you some cool software. New favorite is Photoboard.
