Man, these guys are having a rough month. First the mess of the whole grid launch, and now they get more pie in the face with being unable to handle the digg effect - salt in the wound! I'm going to watch this one closely because i'm planning to move my companies site over to them in a few months if the bugs are worked out.
Digg-proof and Wordpress should not be written in the same sentence. I've managed staying a float on most diggs using two EV1 servers and Elephant. The software was more than the servers but you save money in the long run<a class="user" href="http://www.elephantblog.com">http://www.elephantblog.com</a>
MT's site is back up again. Check out their solution to solve the digg effect. Here is what I've got when following the link on this post.Error 403: ForbiddenYou do not have permission to access this area .
@timdorr - Load Average is defined differently on different platforms. For Linux it's a sum of the average processes running, on the run queue, *and* blocked on I/O. RedHat messes with the scheduler and threading system though so that may not hold true for CentOS, RedHat, and their children, but for every other Linux out there it does. So a LA of 1.0 doesn't mean a fully utilized machine, it may mean one process is waiting on I/O all the time.
Also. RedHat, due to those scheduler changes *HIDES* all the threads MySQL starts up. So on RH (and their children, CentOS, FedoraCore) machines you see ONE process when there really are MANY threads. They still show up in /proc as /proc/./ (dot pid directories). Why did RH see the need to do this that no other Linux is doing? Dunno.
Actual Response Times for Media Temple Grid ServerDon't take my word for it see a Google spreadsheet of actual response times that were over 10 seconds for a site hosted on the media temple grid server.<a class="user" href="http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p-Ab3UaY590VDhZCTaDinHg">http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p-Ab3UaY590VDhZCTaDinHg</a>This is only times that were more than 10 seconds, if I were to put one that was 5 seconds it would be way to many rows?Media Temple is not a bad company, in my opinion they just overstated the ability of the service. It?s great to offer 100 databases in a hosting package but I would settle for 1 that just works.
Logically, any company that grows too fast is going to have service issues. What does "too fast" mean? Services that get a lot of press on social media sites (like Digg) often get a ton of new clients rapidly. Call it "Digg Effect 2.0" --- when a business can't handle the increased load from new clients who heard about on social media and blog sites. Looks like MediaTemple is the latest victim of it.
I could not agree more about MT they really do get you sucked in with Starbucks, Loreal and Diesel etc showing on their homepage as truly satisified customers. I was like WOW we need to be there-NOT. We set up a Grid Account at the suggestion of the sales rep ( after telling him that we thought we needed a DV Server account) as he said it would be fast and more than we need PLUS it was only the "GRID" the could offer us the speed and performance of many many servers even blowing away DV with the exception of lack of root access. He also said should be want to upgrade to DV they would happily move our site to DV. Well after trying out their slow ass grid system we thought we would move to DV. The new rep said they would not move any site as what we were told was not their policy. So, we open up a DV account loaded with old versions of PHP MySql etc. When asked about updating PHP and MySql to versions 5 they said we can follow their online article on how to update PHP (which we did and it was still and old version of 5 when we got done) and we can reinstall MYSQL "because it is your server and you can do whatever you want" and we said why do they offer old versions of everything and when will they update things. They said "we have no idea of when an upgrade will occur (even though the GRID ACCOUNTS at $20 a month have the new versions the $50.00 DV accounts get the old crap) they said not until our IT dept feels that the versions are stable. Are you F@!KING KIDDING ME PHP 5 has been out for years and 4 which they offer is soon to be unsupported.ALL HYPE AND BS. TAKE YOUR NEEDS ELSEWERE!
