Energy is much more dangerous to base things on because its very intangible. You have to be able to measure (accurately) the wealth of a country to make sure things are being kept legitimate.As for gold, actually it is pretty scarce. But it doesn't matter how plentiful or scarce it is, you simply take all the dollars in circulation and divide it by the amount of gold the US government has and thats how much the dollar is worth.If you have to redeem 20,000 bucks for a single ounce of gold then at least you know how much the dollar is worth.
