macleans.ca — A new contraceptive will soon let women stop menstruating. In 2006, a new oral contraceptive called Anya, developed to "put women in control of when or if they want to menstruate," is expected to hit the Canadian and U.S. markets

...women dont get a period when they are on the pill...they get a rebound bleeding from the sudden stopping of taking hormones (during the 7 days they are taking either sugar or iron pills)...if a girls skips these pills, then she doesnt bleed...pharmaceutical manufacturers only put these sugar pills in the packs after every 3 weeks so the girl would "feel more like a natural women."...otherwise they wouldnt get a "period"

As a lot of people have said, the regular pill has been around for ages, as well as the injection, patch, coil; all these things pretty much eliminate periods, probably because its the easiest form of contraception for women, so its nothing new.As for actually taking them, why bother? I understand you women all feel horrible, and we don't know what its like (although we get a pretty rough idea from the amount you complain about it). But just like the rest of life, it should be something you should deal with and come to accept as a right of passage. I don't like getting an erection every morning, but I'm not gonna sit there popping pills which, we all know lead to other nasty s**t.As for the guys who complain about it all, its a perfect time to treat your girlfriends with a bit of compassion, ease them through it, make them feel better, you'll be rewarded later. Also sex is good (for them) when they are on, slip one on and take one for the team, you get to bust a nut and they get to feel better about it.I say instead of trying to f**k with nature scientifically, hows about doing some natural things to combat it, a good diet, lots of exercise most probably helps; also having an understanding boyfriend could help ladies...My two cents.

Although periods are pains in the ass, I don't think I'd ever take something like that. It just can't be good for you.

and once more 90% of digg readers prove they re idiots....im quite impressed... only thing most of u could come up with was 'no period = more sex + no pms' well done

It's annoying, but I would NOT risk to take this thing just to avoid the trouble in 4 days/month, and putting in risk my fertility... O_O

IIRC Pamela Sargeant had written an interesting short story about this concept and it became a Neblua winner. The story revolved around the factions of women who form up because of this: those that insist on having their periods, and those that didn't. She sat both types of women at a dinner table with one man and wrote probably one of the most uncomfortable conversations I think I've ever read in Sci-Fi.It's so strange seeing it happen in real life.

I seriously cannot believe how retarded/offensive some of the comments in this thread are. Are there really so few females that read this site? I knew I was in the minority, but I didn't know the scales were tilted so far.>>Wow. Such a perfect story for a site contolled by geeky 40/30 somethings who still live with their parents and have never seen a real live vagina.Seriously! Major points for you!>they will just come up with another excuse to not have sexYeah, like you not being able to get them off and being tired of faking it.

This is so wrong. Menstruation is a normal, healthy function. We shouldn't mess with Mother Nature.

Yet another person who needs to get out of the house more. Depressing, really.

This story reminds me of a few lines from Macbeth: Come, you spirits That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full Of direst cruelty! make thick my blood; Stop up the access and passage to remorse, That no compunctious visitings of nature Shake my fell purpose, nor keep peace between The effect and it! Come to my woman's breasts, And take my milk for gall, you murdering ministers, Wherever in your sightless substances You wait on nature's mischief! It is a shame that women don't want to be women.

If you don't want to get pregnant I would hope you were with a man that would just get a vasectomey instead of messing with all of the hormones in your body.
