You seriously just recommended Ereshkigal over the modified Papyrus used in Avatar? You've got to be f**king kidding me. Ereshkigal is even MORE distressed than Papyrus and I think it's actually a cheap KNOCK-OFF. f**k.You say choosing Papyrus was the result of a lazy design decision.. but Papyrus does not work on large scales. The font used in Avatar is obviously a modified version of Papyrus. They had to get designers to make a new version that worked on the big screen and also gave it more character. And I think the designers succeeded. You suggest going to some other font foundry and buying anything other than Papyrus.. but this is in fact the lazy way to do things. The designers of the Avatar font saw the potential in Papyrus to be used correctly in this case. And they made the necessary modifications to give it that extra character and work on the big screen. THIS IS NOT LAZY. (If you think it's easily done with a "font editor" then you can go f**k yourself.)I f**king hate you goddamn people who complain about "overused" fonts. I hope you're not a designer because if you are you should know better that you don't simply avoid fonts because their "overused". You avoid them because they don't work for your particular project. There is a time and place for every font. A good designer knows when to use them.
So what? So Hollywood should create a brand new font from scratch for every film ever made? Do you think that's how it works? Seriously? Woody Allen has been using Windsor-EF Elongated for 30+ years, with no modification whatsoever that I can see. Who the f**k cares? Just because Papyrus is more easily recognizable, and a popular target for hate lately, suddenly everyone thinks he's an expert in graphic design.

Actually, I like Futura so I don't see your point.

its that the fonts become cliché, like comic sans does (as others have pointed out). tis not that the fonts themselves are horrible, its just they become like a go-to, common and unimaginative design element. in a movie where they poured massive amounts of money into new hardware and cutting edge graphics, they took a short-cut on something, and it seems an incongruent choice. So more what I'm saying is that its like they didnt care to put in any effort.

Also, comic sans is perfectly fine if you use it properly. Just make the font a bit smaller and type in all caps, and it works.
