Do it do it do it. Although watch for the really small credit unions - they need to be big enough to keep the overhead down and have the institutional expertise to do the job right.

Yeah, the one bank that acted responsibly, didn't give out bad Mortgages was forced to buy a failing bank and was forced to take TARP money by the Government.Horrible bank.

I didn't say there was no penalties to not paying your debts, I enjoy the benefits of having credit and will hopefully use it to leverage buying a home in the coming years. I have no desire to wreck my credit for such little gains.One side note, student loan debt (federal loans atleast) is effectively forever that you can't even have it discharged in bankruptcy. Before the new bankruptcy laws passed I had considered filing bankruptcy just to get out of the majority of my student loans but never went through with due to concern I'd pay the $500~ to declare bankruptcy and have my claims denied and be out my $500 and still have that debt.

I got a mortgage with a local bank when i went back to school and had no job - no other bank would have given me a second look. I managed to pay off all my big bank loans and for the past 2 years have had all my money in my local credit union. My only credit card is with the credit union, where interest is 7.75% and they do NOT raise it for late payments. Credit unions are co-ops - they exist to serve their members, It is a totally different paradigm.
