I don't have any sources, but I'm willing to bet that these companies do so, but don't get nearly as much attention (definitely MS, they have an initiative in DC to help poor people get tech knowledge). Google does so because of its "good guy" image.

All strategies have risks... their strategy is to fight politically instead of using prehistoric tech to fight 21st century big business. That means they hve to get the word out and build strength in numbers. It also means that they have to expose themselves to possible further attack.

Hah.. I was thinking amazon must have a tribe.net page and gets google's help with illegal loggers... as in some sort of offshoot of bloggers. Even after opening the article, I was COMPLETELY confused to be reading something about villagers and a forest.
