news.bbc.co.uk— China's controversial Three Gorges Dam project hits a significant milestone on Saturday, when it is expected to reach its final height of 185m (607 feet). Here are some amazing pictures from the BBC

Looks good, generates power, quit yer whining. How the hell else is a dam going to be built with all those people living along the river? It's actually sounding to me like Americans are more pissed off at China generating power than whatever happens to their people... go play your Warcraft and wear your Nikes and STFU.
Well, there's a reason this is one of the most controversial building projects It displaced almost 100,000 people, and will submerge some of their history. It's also incredibly expensive given how well most think it will work. (Although government wasting resources in not purely a china thing.
persol "Well, there's a reason this is one of the most controversial building projects It displaced almost 100,000 people, and will submerge some of their history"Sorry to disturb your pull-numbers-out-of-my-butt fest..but: the number of directly displaced population exceeds 1.18 MILLION。Too bad both the BBC website and Wikiperia are blocked here in China. Thanks to everyone who posted alternate links.
why does this comment get dugg down? Many poor families have no future anymore. I agree that there must be a way to take away property by the government, but then the compensations are ridiculous. It's nice to see new cities being built at higher altitudes. All new and shiny. Unfortunately only the rich people can afford moving in. The rest of the crowd lives in the old cities until the flood comes in. They have no work and no chance...I'm not against progress. I think the dam is a good thing. But it's sad to see the poor people suffer even more for something they cannot profit from.
In the end, the project will have relocated over 20 million people. It has already destroyed the environment surrounding it. At least 50 people have already died due to environmental changes (landslides, 65 ft. waves). A life is still a life, and saying that 1 million people in China are equal to 10 Americans is incredibly offensive and ignorant.
