@ericnmuTypically the author of the music holds the copyright for the music, and label holds the copyright for the recording. so usage of that recording nets both the author and the label a royalty. Anytime another artist covers that song, the original author receives a royalty, but no the original label.
You said: "Currently" .. "fiduciary duty" .. all rationalizations. Is this what you would say to the artists and their families?Frankly, I couldn't possibly care less about how much money goes to the artists and their families. I want to purchase a product (digital music) and right now the least expensive legal source for it is Allofmp3.com. My point all along has been that nobody cares how the money they spend on goods is used for any other purchase, so why do people care how it's spent on digital music? I appreciate music and understand that artists need financial support to continue making their music, which I love dearly; in the past 20 years I have attended about 200 live shows and bought 700 CDs. However, it's foolish of me to pay more than the lowest amount to get the product I want. If the artists want more money than Allofmp3.com is paying them, they should try to change the Russian licensing system so that Allofmp3.com is not allowed to renew their super-cheap distribution license. Really, should anybody voluntarily pay more than the lowest price for something without getting something in return, like a better variety of the product or better service?
"In the past DVD players did cost hundreds of dollars, now you can pick them up for $50 dollars legit. I bet Bestbuy sells alot more $50 dollar players than $500 dollar players. Business models change and need to be adapted to changing technologies. Let go of the past."Thanks for missing the point entirely. This is not a new business model, where they compete fairly in the marketplace because of their price advantage; this is quite likely an illegal sale of copyrighted materials. I was making a comparison to theft.
@ultmast: Is it moral for a employer not to give an employee a raise for the past two years? The answer you and just about everybody else (including me) will give is that of course it is. If an employee wants a higher salary they should make themselves more in-demand and get another job. I think of Allofmp3.com the same way; perhaps the artists *should* get more money from the site but I'm not the one that made a deal with ROMS; their representatives did.
http://westsounds.com claims to have a simply enormous catalog - over 200,000 albums online. This seemingly extensive catalog contains not just the latest and greatest, but also older tracks too - which lots of people (like me) are shopping for. I have had a tendency to lose CD's over the years, so this is a good way for me to reclaim (cheaply) the music I've already bought in the past.
