Considering that nearly 3-million people voted and under 600 votes separate the top two candidates, I can't blame him. It'll be interesting to see what the numbers are after the recount.
I'm glad that Franken is challenging the election. First, it's a reasonable thing to do, with only 600 votes between him and Coleman. I think that might be a slim enough margin to send it into automatic recount, anyway. Second, Norm Coleman is a total slimeball!
What's actually the deal with all those absentee ballots? CNN's count is right now at around 121 million votes for the presidential candidates. That's less than the 122 million votes counted in 2004. But at the same time I'm reading articles about record voter turnouts where they claim that more than 136 million votes were casted. Are those missing 14 million votes absentee ballots? And if yes then how can an elected be decided without taking 10% of the votes into account? You Americans definitely have a weird election system.
On a small level, I've got to agree - it doesn't make sense to me that because Franken is one of those Hollywood actors whose political views and 90's popularity make him a good candidate for Senate - just glad I don't live in MN.
Al Franken has always been overrated. Its too bad that minnesotta democrats couldn't find a legitimate candidate to run instead of a boring talk radio host who gets more attention than he deserves because he was one of the unfunny members of a good snl cast. Why doesn't Chris Farley run for Senator from Wisconsin or Phil Hartman run for Senator from California? They were both a hell of a lot funnier than Al Franken.
Norm Coleman has asked that there not be a recount, to save the state money. I can't agree more. Norm, we are all awaiting your gracious concession speech.
