Well, unless GTalk allows you to speak with multiple other Gtalk members at the same time then it's pretty much useless. Skype has set the standard here, Google needs to go a long ways to surpass what Skype has done.

I do not think the cell phone carriers and phone companies would be too happy if Gtalk would access the phone network for free. That could run them out of business.

GTalk and LibJingle is now 14 months old. It's had a few minor updates but still looks like an Alpha. LibJingle has had zero takeup. In that same time Skype has had 3 major upgrades. The only way any of the IM-VoIP-Video-IP packages are going to get ahead is to ship more often. The only one I see actually doing this is Skype. MSN, YM!, AIM have all had releases in that time, but they really haven't added anything and the they're all horribly bloated code with nasty aggressive install programs.Google's apparent inability to ship is really disappointing. Gtalk and LibJingle had the potential to be the one IM that unites them all. I really thought we would see a GTalk-Jabber-AIM-iChat-Trillian-Gaim-SIP convergence but it's not happening. And let's not forget that IM programs are not just IM any more. To compete you need voice VoIP-POTS interconnect. Conference calls, group chat, video, presence, APIs and plenty of other stuff as well. This is really beginning to hurt the pure IM players like Trillian and Gaim.
