He asked the border agents repeatedly "Am I being detained?" Never once did border agents answer the question. Why?Perhaps it's because they knew that they had no cause to detain him?
Your nuanced opinion frightens and infuriates me! How can you feel sorry for both sides? Why can't you just pick a side and scream incoherently in favor of it? THIS IS THE INTERNET FOR GOD'S SAKEAAOSIEHROASHEOFHOH2O32523!!!!!!!!!111
He's on a one-man crusade to point out that there are "internal road blocks" where the Bill of Rights is being trampled on. He's been through that check point many times. He refuses to allow the police to use intimidation to break the law (which is precisely what they are attempting to do) and when he does so the police move more and more into illegal territory. Again, he may be annoying, but he is doing it deliberately to show the fact that the police are acting in an illegal manner. They've been doing it for a long time, with official sanction. We have LOST our rights because we stopped enforcing them. Don't argue with a cop - he's just acting to protect you. Don't worry about your lost civil rights, we have your best interest in mind. Don't worry when we shoot your mother, kill your dog, take your house and car - we know what's best for you.
The driver is not allowed to do this. His belligerence from the start is enough for probable cause. He must present himself when ordered by police. He IS allowed to step out of the car and lock it behind him to prevent search of the vehicle. He does NOT have the right to refuse to be detained when he is on public property.
The guy is a complete and total dick, but it does show what a police state the US is becoming. Remember the old movies where the communist/nazi secret police guy in a black leather trench coat asks for your “papers” for no reason. We used to think that was funny…

You can give up whatever rights you feel necessary, I, on the other hand, will do no such thing.
