roughtype.com — Adblock Plus, the Firefox browser plug-in that erases advertisements from web pages, is a killer of a killer app ... or it could be if it became really popular. The widespread adoption of ad-blocking software could totally atomize online advertising. But, the numbers still aren't high enough YET to spur a counterattack by the big guns, like Google.

I use adblock plus along with the Filterset.G Updater on all my FF installs - I'm so used to them being there that I actually get a surprise if I use someone elses PC (invariably with IE) that doesn't have them installed and navigate to a regular site I visit (such as Digg) as see banner ads and the such all over the place! I showed a work colleague my Yahoo mail the other day after I commented on the ads on his one when I glanced his screen, needless to say he was quite impressed!

I wouldn't worry too much about it. A lot of smart people are paid a lot of money to sell us things we don't want or need. They'll win in the end, ABP is just a small counter insurgency attack against the monolith of consumerism. The ambivalence of the majority of people who will continue to buy in the tacit agreement with the corporations; those small minority can "opt-out" without the system collapsing. I do not see any tipping point any time soon, by the time one would come, I'm sure the internet in its current form will be antiquated. Well, that's how I sell it to myself.

Exactly, stores have to pay for water and electricity ... just like bloggers have to pay for hosting ... just because you walk into a store or browse a site doesnt mean you owe them a dime

Hi I recently learned that firefox usage in my country is very close to 50%. I suggested on a few ffx sites that some kind of PR event be organized in honor of the occasion. But despite the positive opinions of comment posters one parson's attempts seem to not be enough. I'll be publishing an article about it shortly. I was just wondering if someone would care to help a bit.rgdsU5K0http://www.spreadfirefox.com/node/28308

I use ads on a couple websites I run, but you know what? Even without the ad revenue, I'd pay for them out of pocket before I declared war on visitors that chose to use ad-blocking software.

The ads in magazines usually are relevant to the information, they're right next to the paid^H^H^H^Hobjective reviews.
