i bartend occasionally at a bar/restaurant. i keep my tips and instead of monetary pay i recieve bulk food & drink. i do my dentists taxes in exchange for two cleanings a year. my mechanic services my bike and in exchange i watch his two dogs twice a year when he and his wife go on vacation (luckily, they get on well with my own). my neighbours children come over after school 1-3x a week for an hour or so and in exchange, their father takes care of my yard. on and on it goes. great system and a great way to become involved in the community.

Oh absolutely. When you barter with your neighbors they get to know you and your family and can easily spot someone who does not belong. This leads to less crime because the last thing a crook wants is to be noticed by neighbors. Back in the early eighties I was home from work due to illness when I saw a moving truck pull up at the house three doors down from me. Knowing that the people who lived there had no intention of moving I waited until the thieves were inside the house and used vise grips to crush the fuel line and then called the local police. They fired the truck up and got about ten or fifteen feet before there was no fuel left in their carburetor. The police showed up in time to arrest one of the thieves who was trying to figure out why the truck wouldn't run. The others got away on foot but were later captured by the K-9 patrol. Trading with your neighbors makes economic sense and also makes sense as far as community security.
