When I need to send an "announcement" type email to lots of people, I usually send it to myself - and then include everyone else as BCC. That way, if someone accidentally clicks reply-all then I am the only recipient.Saves them the embarrassment, and stops bosses getting annoyed by too many frivolous emails going round the office.
When I worked in a large office, I would say that "at least" 5% of my day was spent wading though long emails that I had been cc'd in - and which I didn't really need to see. However, I would still have to read them, just in case they were relevant.
Putting a dollar amount loss to "information overload" is absurd. Does it waste time? Yes. Does easy access to information, and instant communication improve production? Yes. The $650b claim is BS.
Umm, if you wate time - then that is time for which your employer is paying you to work when you are not being productive.It is incredibly easy to extrapolate a valid dollar loss from that.

i save the economy money by reading all my "reply all" junk in around 30 seconds per message, and spend the rest of my 5% time on digg.
